NERVOUS SYSTEM REGULATION SESSIONS
We cannot meet the highest vision we hold of ourselves if our nervous system cannot support our growth.

WHAT IS THE NERVOUS SYSTEM?
The Nervous System is a complex network that helps us communicate and coordinate all of our actions effectively and precisely. Think about it as your body's control centre, constantly sending and receiving messages, ensuring seamless coordination, optimal functioning and safety. The intricate web of nerves connects to every part of the body, creating a tapestry of communication and responsiveness. It plays a key role in your ability to sense the world around you; it allows you to perceive even the slightest pain signal that alerts potential danger, the touch of a loved one and even the warmth of the sun on our skin. It is not only working to keep you alive, it is working for your pleasure!
THE TWO DIVISIONS OF THE AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM
There are two essential components of the autonomic (automatic) nervous system, responsible for regulating involuntary bodily functions. The sympathetic nervous system is often referred to as the "fight or flight" response or the stress response, activated in times of stress, danger, or excitement. It increases heart rate, dilates pupils and releases adrenaline, preparing the body for immediate action. On the other hand, the parasympathetic nervous system is known as the "rest and digest" response, promoting relaxation, digestion, and restoration. It slows heart rate, lowers blood pressure and enhances digestion. The balance between these two systems is crucial for maintaining optimal bodily functioning and seamlessly adapting to various environmental demands. While the sympathetic system prepares us for action, the parasympathetic system brings us back to equilibrium after the threat has passed. Together, they work together to keep our bodies functioning optimally as we move through our days.
The vagus nerve, also known as the tenth cranial nerve or the "wandering nerve," is a crucial component of the parasympathetic nervous system. It is the longest and most complex nerve in the body, extending from the brainstem to various organs such as the heart, lungs, and digestive system. It is most often associated with the body's relaxation response (the parasympathetic branch), as it is involved in lowering heart rate, decreasing blood pressure, regulating inflammation, regulating the immune system responses and promoting digestion.
THE MODERN HUMAN EXPERIENCE
Our bodies are incredibly intelligent and resilient but sometimes, our human experience can overwhelm us. Trauma, loss, heartbreak, abuse, divorce, for example, can push us too far into our sympathetic nervous system (stress response) for too long, and cause us to either freeze (shutdown) or struggle to regain equilibrium. Our ability to adapt to our environment then becomes more difficult and we can store the result of this shock in our physical bodies making us unconsciously armour up to protect our future selves. When this happens, we begin to perceive threats all around us.
Alongside this, our days are much busier than they used to be. We are consistently processing and generating more information than ever before in human history but our internal systems have not caught up. We have not yet evolved to comfortably integrate this volume of experience; from smart phones, social media, netflix, working 5 days a week while raising a family…we are suddenly in a world of endless choices, too much to do, and not enough time to do it in. As a consequence, many of us are in a perpetual state of heightened sympathetic activity (stress response) and we lose the ability to recognise and respond to the in the moment cues from our nervous system. It then becomes increasingly difficult to rest, to react rationally and logically to external and internal stimulus and to hear our truth; anxiety, prolonged fear, stress, anger, depression or a sense of numbness (disconnection) may then manifest.
WHAT DO TO?
When we have been out of balance for a while, or when we have experienced significant trauma, it is imperative not to do too much too soon. The body takes time to recalibrate but the environment for this to happen must be gentle, safe and supportive. The aim is to gradually unwind and de-armour the nervous system so that your mind and body can trust life again. This takes time, but the results can last a lifetime.
NERVOUS SYSTEM REGULATION SESSIONS
- TAILORED for YOU
THE PATH TO REGULATION - MY APPROACH, THROUGH BREATHWORK AND THE FELT SENSE
I have crafted these Nervous System Regulation sessions loosely based on the Biodynamic Breathwork method which includes an element of breathing for somatic trauma and emotional release, but I have incorporated my own method of active questioning throughout to support anything that is arising in the moment. This will help you to connect deeply with the Felt Sense which, long term, is a complete game changer for how we show up in life. Our Felt Sense is our ability to sense our physical body’s in the moment cues as it responds to our internal and external environment. These cues are always guiding us but either go undetected due to our inability to be present (most often due to hectic lifestyles) or an accumulation of stress/trauma. I will teach you to tune in and listen deeply.
We will use the breath to move between both branches of your nervous system, the sympathetic and parasympathetic branch - this is called pendulation. When we do this, we are able to begin the process of moving stored emotions from the body to free space for rest, and then growth. This is when your ‘window of tolerance’ widens to be able to move through the world with more ease, joy and connection.
When we work intimately with the nervous system and want to strengthen mind-body connection, an element of consistency is necessary as this builds physiological trust. I care deeply about your safety when working with your nervous system so this is not a fast track approach and why at least 4-8 sessions will be required. It is a gentle yet theraputic approach that is designed to create a long-term difference.
WHAT WILL EACH SESSION LOOK LIKE?
We will always begin each session with a chat to ensure that the breathwork does not push you beyond your limits. You will show up differently each day, with different levels of activation (stress) present, and so each session will reflect this. They will be tailored to where you are at in the moment but will follow a loose structure of felt sense exploration and focused breathing techniques to both stimulate and down-regulate your nervous system.
During the sessions, you may experience a range of physical sensations such as tingling, heat changes, involuntary shaking, twitches, tension and feelings of release. You may also find that emotions come up.
I would suggest having one session a week - they are shorter sessions that can slot into your day to day easily.
THE AIMS:
promote an easier day to day assimilation a full spectrum of emotions
allow a gentle release of frozen emotions from the body
to offer significant release from anxiety, stress and overwhelm
to improve the relationship to self, and others
to allow space in the body for big shifts in personal growth. Meeting the highest vision we hold of ourselves cannot happen when our nervous system cannot support growth
THINGS TO NOTE:
Each of the four sessions will be around 45 minutes to slot easily into your day
These sessions will be on Zoom
You will be seated so you may want a cushion to sit on
Headphones are advisable
Come in comfy clothes and with a blanket/jumper on hand as temperature changes are possible
I look forward to working together with you to create a flexible nervous system so that you can meet the highest vision you hold of yourself, and of your life.
